Revamped Narrative:
Kimono-Inspired Elegance
These days, the beauty of kimonos is widely appreciated—but outside of a small circle of enthusiasts, few people wear them regularly. In fact, many kimonos remain tucked away in closets, rarely seeing the light of day.Costella Bana began with a simple yet elegant concept: transforming traditional Tango Chirimen kimonos into contemporary jackets. Crafted from pure silk, the fabric flatters the complexion, feels light, and offers cozy warmth in winter. Even for those who don’t wear kimonos, this jacket makes a chic everyday companion—perfect for short strolls outings.
A Seamless Transformation?:
Not Quite.
Converting a kimono into Western-style clothing is far from straightforward. While it's relatively easy to create garments that remain within the aesthetic realm of kimono design, true transformation requires artistry and precision. For one, kimono fabrics come in narrow rolls—just about 37 cm wide—significantly smaller than standard Western textiles. This demands the use of multiple yokes and careful planning to integrate the kimono’s intricate patterns into a fresh silhouette.
Our designers embrace this challenge with enthusiasm, crafting three-dimensional constructions that honor the curvaceous grace inherent to kimono material.
